Effective talk: Becoming a manager

Year of Talk: 2024

Common mistakes:

  • Placing people who are skilled technically into management. Especially when they don't have experience.

  • Needs time to learn how to become a better manager.

  • 47% of managers quit due to stress in 2023. Needs to rework the system to help relieve the stress.

Causes for management to leave:

  • An overwhelming amount of work was given. They need to fulfill their old work as well as manage a bunch of people. Even though it lets people to still work on their passion, but can overload their plates with work.

  • People assume becoming a manager is the next step. But at times, this might not be the case. They are unable to manage people well enough.

  • Forcing skillful people from their positions might leave the team lacking and needing a lot of time to recuperate.

  • The amount of extra work that managers are expected to do besides their normal work can cause many of them to start feeling impostor syndrome.

  • If managers feel inadequate at their jobs or are not trained correctly and leave the job, it can leave the next manager with a lot of chaos they need to fix.

  • This can create a self-fulfilling prophecy of managers not properly completing their role and leaving the mess to the next person.

  • Be careful what you normalize as a manager. Some companies might have cultures that slowly become corrupted and when managers leave the company to other companies they can infect their new workplaces.

Becoming a better manager:

  • Think about how previous managers did their jobs or helped people under them.

  • Make sure to take care of your self and the people under you. If moral starts going doing it wont let the team produce the best work.

  • Having poor mental health can influence not only the team's work but also other teams over time.

  • Make sure to constantly stay in communication with team members, other managers, and keep a genuine relationship.
